Trailmon: a trail-conditions project that reaches beyond the website
A mountain-bike project connecting solar-powered devices with conditions updates.
A trail-conditions update is more useful when it reflects what is happening where someone wants to ride.
Trailmon describes a project using solar-powered connected devices to provide mountain-bike trail updates. Its public page credits Chris and Andy and gives visitors a way to sign up for updates.
From the trail to the rider.
A concept sketch of a field reading becoming a conditions update.
The website is one part of the project
The interesting scope here reaches beyond a browser. The idea connects a device out in the world with information a rider can receive. The public page gives that idea a simple introduction.
The website also appears in the labs section of the It's Fine company site. That is a reason to tell this story with the actual development stage in view. A public introduction, a working prototype, and a deployed device are different milestones.
A conditions update also has a time dimension. A rider needs to know whether it reflects the trail now or an earlier observation. That makes the path from a field reading to an understandable update central to the idea.
